Emu Street Carpark to receive official name – community to provide suggestions

Residents are getting the chance to suggest an official name for the Emu St Carpark in Longreach, with Council inviting suggestions that have some significance to the community.

People are being asked to submit names with historical and cultural significance, or names that honour a person or family that has played a significant role in the community. Suggestions can be submitted via an online survey, by completing a form available at any Council office or library, or via email.

The Mayor, Cr Ed Warren, said the opportunity is there for the name to become part of the nomenclature of the town.

“It’s not everyday that we get that chance to name something this big. The name we choose now will become part of the everyday vocabulary of our town way into the future.

“So it’s important to have as many options on the table as possible.”

Council is assembling a three member working group to review the suggestions and make the final recommendation to Council. The working group will consist of one Councillor, one representative of the Longreach Archival and Historical Research Group, and one representative of the Longreach State High School student council.

Interested community members can make their suggestions online at surveymonkey.com/r/EmuStCarpark, at any Council office or library, or via email at assist@longreach.qld.gov.au. People have until close of business on Friday 1 March to submit suggestions, with the final decision being refereed to Council’s ordinary meeting on 21 March.
