Christmas fun starts at the mailbox this year
A new ‘best mailbox or sign’ category is set to allow rural landholders to join in the annual Longreach Regional Council Christmas Lights Competition this year.
The new category will recognise the property with the most festively decorated mailbox or roadside sign, with entrants asked to submit a photo for judging. It joins the traditional business, residence, and street/block categories in the popular annual competition. Entries are now open in Longreach, Ilfracombe, Isisford and Yaraka. With $4,500 in cash and prizes up for grabs throughout the region, Council is expecting it to be a hotly contested competition.
In Longreach, judging takes place on Monday the 10th of December. Council is producing a map so the whole family can head out on judging night to enjoy the festive atmosphere in their neighbourhood.
Council is also celebrating the festive season with the community in other ways. The annual Carols by Candlelight concert is returning to Edkins Park by popular demand on Monday 3 December. Patrons can sing the night away with performances from local choirs and performers, including the Longreach School of Dance. Children are even advised to watch out for a special appearance from Santa!
The Longreach Library is also getting into the spirit during December offering holiday craft activities on Tuesdays and festive book readings on Thursdays leading up to Christmas.
Council is also proudly sponsoring a season of family friendly Christmas movies at 2pm in the Star Cinema each Sunday in December; featuring holiday classics such as A Muppet Christmas Carol, Home Alone and more. It is hoped the free afternoon sessions will prove popular with families trying to beat the heat.
