Council buys local at record levels
Longreach Regional Council says it is spending more money locally than ever before. In its latest quarterly review the Council reported a 42% increase in the amount it spent locally compared with the previous year.
Council spent $8,207,274 with local businesses in the Jul-Dec 2017 period, up from $4,833,569 the previous year.
Chief Executive Officer, Ian Bodill, said Council makes it a priority to spend as much money as possible locally.
“We have a Buy Local policy, and we’ve done a lot of work in the past year to improve our procurement methods, including a 10% preferential allowance for local suppliers. It’s all combined to make our process more equitable and transparent for everyone involved.
“I’m delighted with these figures, especially when you consider they’re just capital spend – they don’t even take in to account things like our $15M annual wage bill, which is injected directly into our community.
“I don’t think we’ve ever invested more money in our community than what we’re doing now.”
He acknowledged it was impossible for Council to spend all its money locally.
“There are some costs we can’t keep local – like our electricity bill for example. But overall, I think we’re doing a good job of keeping money in the region.”
