COUNCIL RECEIVES FUNDING FOR $1.2M JOBS BOOST
Longreach Regional Council has received $1.2M in funding to boost job creation and retention, thanks to the Queensland Government ‘Works for Queensland’ program.
The 2016–17 Works for Queensland (W4Q) program supports regional councils to undertake job-creating maintenance and minor infrastructure projects. Longreach Regional Council has 7 projects approved under the scheme, supporting in excess of 68 jobs over the life of the program.
One of the first projects to be submitted involves the installation of new playground equipment in Edkins Park. Council received a petition in January signed by over 60 children from Longreach asking for “a twirl slide, monkey bars and a big zip line across the park”!
Mayor Ed Warren said Council was pleased to be able to respond to the request.
“These kids have shown great initiative putting this petition together. I’m glad we were able to include this project in the funding and get it done much sooner than we otherwise could have.”
Longreach isn’t the only town getting new play gear, with the children of Isisford and Ilfracombe also in line to benefit from upgraded playground equipment.
The program isn’t just about playgrounds either, with other projects including a much anticipated upgrade to the Yaraka Hall, and the sealing of one kilometre of River Farms Road, allowing all-weather access to tourism operators on the Thomson River.
More than 700 projects have been approved across Queensland and it is estimated the works will support, sustain or create almost 6,000 jobs statewide.
