Ilfracombe will celebrate Australia Day with an evening of 20-20 cricket, with the Ilfracombe Scorpions taking on the out-of-town Cockies team.

A free community barbeque will be on offer between innings, where Australia Day ambassador Dr Bob McGregor will deliver an address and Mayor Ed Warren will be on hand to announce the winners of the Australia Day awards.

Council’s Ilfracombe Branch Manager, Wes Irwin said the cricket game had become a popular fixture on the Ilfracombe calendar. “It started out as townies versus cockies” he explained. “But now the players come from all over.”

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere, under lights at the Wayne Taylor Oval, which is looking better than ever at the moment.”

Mayor Ed Warren encouraged locals to stay in town for the event.

“A lot of people like to go away for the Australia Day holiday, but we have such a strong community, we want to encourage everyone to celebrate in region.”

Australia Day ambassador Dr Bob McGregor was named Queensland’s Senior Australian of the Year for 2014 in recognition of his contribution as an advocate, fundraiser and practitioner in the field of paediatrics. In addition to delivering an Australia Day address, Dr McGregor will assist the Mayor in presenting the Ilfracombe Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards.

Play commences on the Wayne Taylor Oval at 5:00pm with festivities taking place from 6:30pm.
