Cemeteries
History
The Longreach Cemetery was established in 1893. Longreach Regional Council holds a register of all burials documented from the first grave recorded in original journals.
The Longreach Cemetery has a number of interesting monuments, and the Longreach Archival and Historical Research Group Inc has produced a brochure to assist with self guided tours. This brochure is available from the Visitor Information Centre, Eagle Street Longreach.
General Information
The Longreach Cemetery is located on the south east edge of the Township along Raven Road. Operation and maintenance of the cemetery is under the control of the Longreach Regional Council and any enquires should be directed to the Council on (07) 4658 4111. The Longreach Cemetery comprises of a Monumental Cemetery, Lawn Cemetery, and Columbarium Section.
Maintenance Procedures
Longreach Regional Council is committed to ensuring that the Cemetery is maintained to a high standard. In order to sustain this standard maintenance is carried out on a weekly basis.
Private work to maintain existing structures is encouraged in the monumental section of the Cemetery. Approval of proposed works is required. Please contact Council's Administration Office to make necessary arrangements.
Monumental Cemetery
The Monumental Cemetery is the oldest and the most traditional section of the Longreach Cemetery with gravesites dating back to 1893. This section of the Cemetery has been closed to new internments. The need to close the Monumental Cemetery to new internments was hastened by rising maintenance costs, the difficulties experienced with the Cemetery layout and the lack of certainty of the location of unmarked graves. Council's resolution is to honour only grave sites that have been previously reserved.![]()
Lawn Cemetery
The Lawn Cemetery is the most recently established section of the Longreach Cemetery, with its use commencing on 10 November 1978.
The Lawn Cemetery provides permanent memorialisation and identification of the deceased by the placement of a single plaque placed on the grave at the ground level. The cast bronze plaque of 381mm x 279mm is solely supplied and affixed in position upon a standard strip of concrete by the Longreach Regional Council.
No monumental work is allowed in the Lawn Cemetery.
