Council launches improved community donations process

Back
Longreach Regional Council is launching improvements to its community donations program that will offer clearer guidelines for applicants and increased probity for ratepayers.

The new Community Donations program replaces the former Community Grants program, and offers financial and in-kind support to community groups based in the region. Presented in four funding rounds anually, eligible organisations can apply for up to $5,000 per financial year under the program.

Director of Community and Cultural Services, Lisa Young, said the changes will make the application process clearer for community groups.

“We’ve added some rigour to the application process, and we’ve developed clearer guidelines that we hope will make the program easier to understand. We’re also adding some checks and balances to the process so ultimately there’s even more oversight.”

Ms Young said the acquittal process has also had a refresh.

“We’re also adding some steps to the acquittal process so we can keep track of how the donation helped, and what the benefits to the community were. That information will also help us when we go to develop future funding programs.”

To help the community understand the new guidelines, Council is hosting information sessions in Longreach, Ilfracombe, and Isisford. The hour long session, hosted by Council staff, will step participants through the entire application and acquittal process from start to finish.
