Mayor in voluntary self-isolation following meeting with McDonald

Longreach Regional Council has confirmed that Mayor Ed Warren is in precautionary self-isolation for 14 days following a meeting on Friday morning with Senator Susan McDonald, who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Mayor is acting on advice from health authorities. Because the Senator was not exhibiting symptoms at the meeting, and the Mayor is also exhibiting no symptoms, there is no immediate requirement for Mayor Warren to be tested for the virus. However, in line with advice, he will instead self-isolate for a period of 14 days. 

The Mayor said he was advised the virus is more transmissible when carriers are exhibiting symptoms.

“When you come into contact with someone who has the virus, the risk of transmission is minor if they’re not yet exhibiting symptoms. Of course, a minor risk is still a risk – so it makes sense to take the advice and self-isolate for 14 days after contact.”

Health authorities delivered a briefing to Councillors and senior Council staff this morning to update them on COVID-19 response in the central-west. The Mayor, who is not seeking re-election at the upcoming polls, attended the briefing with Councillors via teleconference. Council was due to have its final meeting of the current term in Isisford on Thursday – but will instead convene the meeting in Longreach; where the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Leonie Nunn, will assume the chair.
