Council urges community to commemorate ANZAC Day from home

Back
Longreach Regional Council is encouraging the community to commemorate ANZAC Day at home this year, as restrictions on mass gatherings remain in place across the nation.

Mayor Tony Rayner will join an RSL Sub-Branch representative in a two-person wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph in Longreach, but the Mayor is encouraging individuals to adhere to restrictions and mark the occasion in their own households, privately.

“There are many ways we can observe ANZAC Day in our own private way” he said. “Whether it’s standing in silence at 6:00 am, with a candle, at the end of your driveway – or listening to one of the many on-air services that will be broadcast throughout the day.

“The community is doing everything it can to honour ANZAC Day, despite restrictions. Council are flying our ANZAC Day banners on Eagle Street, as we always do, 4LG will be broadcasting an on-air service locally, and I know many in our community will be keen to conduct their own reflections on the day.

“Although we won’t be gathered together, we will never forget.”
