ISISFORD WATER SUPPLY - PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT UPDATE

Published on 19 October 2026

Next update: Friday 23 October 2026, or as the situation changes.

Longreach Regional Council advises people in the Isisford area to Stay Informed of the following Public Heath Alert.

In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Council advises that all residents in Isisford do not consume treated tap water or raw water from the Isisford Water Supply Scheme following the identification of Raphidiopsis Raciborksii (a freshwater cyanobacterium) in the water supply. This alert applies to all residents in Isisford.

The restriction on swimming in the Barcoo River has been lifted.

Longreach Regional Council is working closely with Queensland Health and the Water Supply Regulator to resolve the situation.

Council is conducting water quality sampling and making required changes to the treatment processes at the water treatment plant. This work is likely to continue through towards the end of the week. This alert will stay in effect until Longreach Regional Council and Queensland Health are confident there is no longer a public health concern. Regular updates will be provided to affected communities.

Important:

  • Consuming drinking water or raw water during this alert could lead to illness or discomfort.
  • Residents should note that boiling the water will not make it safe to drink or use for food preparation as it does not remove the contamination.

What you should do:

  • Alternative safe supplies of drinking water should be used for drinking, preparing food and beverages, brushing teeth and making ice. Residents are urged to share this alert with neighbours and friends.
  • Bottled water is available to residents at Council’s administration building located in St Mary Street.
  • Residents can continue the use of water for dishwashing, flushing toilets, washing clothes, showering and bathing.
  • If you believe the water has made you sick, contact the Central Queensland Public Health Unit on 07 4920 6989, your local doctor or local hospital, and advise them of this alert.
