Waste

Longreach Regional Council provides bin collection once weekly for residents and up to twice weekly for businesses. Council also operates four waste management facilities at each of our communities. The Longreach Landfill is managed by Proterra Group and the sites at Ilfracombe, Isisford and Yaraka are open 24/7.

Never Bin a Battery
Did you know that throwing batteries in your household bins can cause serious fires? Whether it’s lithium-ion, button batteries, or everyday household batteries — they should NEVER go in your kerbside, recycling, or green waste bins.
Fire Risk is Real
When batteries are crushed in waste trucks or recycling facilities, they can spark and start dangerous fires, putting workers, communities, and the environment at risk.
Watch for Hidden Batteries
Many everyday items contain built-in batteries that people often forget about — like vapes, laptops, smartwatches, and even kids’ toys. These should never be tossed in the bin either!
Stay Safe – Tape Before You Drop
Before recycling lithium batteries, place clear sticky tape over the terminals. This simple step helps prevent sparks and reduces fire risk.
Dispose Responsibly
Take your used batteries and battery-powered devices to a proper drop-off or recycling point.
Let’s work together to keep our community safe — never bin a battery!
Queensland State Government acting through the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation to provide the local battery collection program.
