Life at Longreach Regional Council
How We’re Structured and Where You Fit
When you work at Council, you’re part of an organisation designed around one clear purpose: serving our community.
Everything we do is guided by the people who live, work and visit our region. Our Mayor and Councillors represent the community and set the strategic direction, while our Chief Executive Officer (CEO) leads the organisation and ensures strong, ethical and effective governance.
A Structure That Supports Meaningful Work
Council’s day‑to‑day work is delivered through four specialist directorates, each playing a vital role in supporting our community and delivering essential services. This structure allows our people to focus on what they do best while working collaboratively across the organisation.
Works Directorate
If you’re passionate about hands‑on outcomes and community infrastructure, this is where you can make a tangible difference. The Works team delivers and maintains essential services including:
- Roads and civil infrastructure
- Waste management
- Water and sewerage services
Communities Directorate
This directorate is all about connection, wellbeing and place. People working in Communities help deliver inclusive, welcoming services by managing:
- Libraries and community facilities
- Parks, gardens and public spaces
- Pools, showgrounds and town halls
- Community engagement and programs
Finance Directorate
Finance underpins everything we do. Roles in this directorate support the organisation through:
- Budgeting and financial planning
- Financial governance and reporting
- Payroll, procurement and business systems
- Information technology and digital services
Organisational Services Directorate
This is where strategy, people and compliance come together. Careers in Organisational Services span a wide range of professional and specialist areas, including:
- People & Culture and workplace safety
- Economic development
- Planning and development
- Legal, regulatory and compliance services
- Commercial services and leasing
- Disaster management and resilience
Clear Leadership, Accountability and Support
Our structure provides clear reporting lines and accountability, so everyone understands how their role contributes to the bigger picture.
Employees report through their teams to Directors who form the Executive Leadership Team, led by the CEO. In turn, the CEO is accountable to the Mayor and Councillors, and ultimately, to the community we serve.
Council also works with advisory committees, working groups and an Audit & Risk Committee, ensuring decisions are informed, transparent and well governed. State and Federal Governments provide additional guidance through legislation, funding and service delivery partnerships.
What This Means for You
For jobseekers, our structure means:
- Clear roles and responsibilities
- Strong leadership and professional support
- Opportunities to work across diverse service areas
- A genuine connection between your work and community outcomes
- A culture built on transparency, accountability and public service
When you join Council, you’re not just taking a job. You’re becoming part of a team that exists to make a real difference every day.
