Water Mains Upgrade
The Longreach Regional Council is pleased to confirm a program to replace aged and failing underground water mains across Longreach. This important project will ensure the town continues to have reliable, clean, and safe drinking water for years to come.
What the Project Involves
- Replacing approximately 7.3 kilometres of ageing water mains with durable PVC infrastructure.
- Installing new water mains across key streets in four project tranches: Gull, Heron, Rosella, Tern; Kestrel, Bower, Kookaburra, Plover, Robin, Quarrian, Sunbird; Gull, Ilfracombe Road, Jabiru Street (from Gull Street to the Pony Club and Showgrounds); and underbores at the Highway and Railway crossings at Spoonbill and Jabiru.
These upgrades will reduce leaks, improve water efficiency, and support a more reliable water supply for the Longreach community.
The project is part of the Australian Government's Water Infrastructure for Sustainable and Efficient Regions (WISER) initiative, funded through the National Water Grid Fund, and supported by the Queensland Government Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, delivering water security outcomes for communities across Queensland, including Longreach.
Why it’s important
Longreach relies on its underground water mains network to deliver safe drinking water to households, businesses, and public spaces. Much of the existing network is ageing and at risk of failure.
Upgrading these water mains will:
- Reduce the risk of bursts and unplanned water supply interruptions.
- Support water conservation goals by minimising leaks.
- Improve the reliability and longevity of the town’s water infrastructure.
Benefits for the community
Water Conservation
- Reduces water loss in the reticulation network.
- Supports the efficiency of digital water meters.
Reliable Water Supply
- Ensures safe, clean drinking water for households, businesses, and public facilities.
- Minimises unplanned disruptions and costly repairs.
Community Wellbeing & Liveability
- Protects water supply for schools, parks, childcare centres, and public spaces.
- Supports local economic growth by reducing days affected by water supply interruptions.
- Provides confidence in Longreach’s water security for future development.
Supporting Longreach’s future
The Longreach Water Mains Upgrade is an investment in sustainability, resilience, and livability. By replacing critical water infrastructure, Council is ensuring a secure water supply, protecting the community, supporting local industries, and building confidence for future growth.
