Garden Category Description

BEST LARGE TOWN GARDEN
This category is open to all in-town residents, whether you rent or own your home.  To qualify as a Large Town Garden, your entry should feature either: a double block, or a single block where the majority of the property is dedicated to garden space.  We’re looking for gardens that showcase extensive use of the available area, whether it's lush lawns, established trees, vibrant flower beds, productive veggie patches, or thoughtfully landscaped spaces. New or well-established gardens are both welcome — it’s all about creativity, effort, and the love of gardening!

BEST SMALL TOWN GARDEN
This category is open to all in-town residents, whether renting or owning.  A Small Town Garden includes properties such as a single block with limited garden space, or a half block or smaller, where creative and thoughtful gardening has been achieved within a compact area.  Whether it’s a front yard, backyard, courtyard, or even a combination of small spaces, we’re looking for gardens that make the most of limited space — through clever design, productive planting, or simply a passion for greenery. Both new gardens and well-established ones are welcome.

BEST FLOWER GARDEN
Entries in this category can be for either planted gardens, garden beds or flower-pot gardens that are focused on providing an abundance of eye-catching colour and fragrance stemming from vibrant displays of spring annuals and/or seasonal flowering shrubs.

BEST FRUIT/VEGETABLE GARDEN
Entries in this category can be for either planted gardens or garden beds focused on providing an abundance of a range of healthy and productive fruit/vegetables looking at the cleanliness, fertility, cropping practices, good use of space and the variety of crop, along with measures to reduce the need for watering and sustainable cultivation methods. Judges will assess the overall appearance and presentation of the entry.

BEST CONTAINER GARDEN
This category celebrates the creativity of gardens grown in containers – proving that you don’t need a big space to make a big impact! Entries can feature plants grown in: Upcycled items like old wheelbarrows, rustic posts, barrels, or boots, Traditional pots and planters arranged in imaginative ways, grouped containers that together tell a visual story or enhance a garden space. Judging will be based on: Originality and uniqueness of the containers, Overall presentation and tidiness, how well the containers are integrated into the garden design.  Whether quirky, elegant, or eco-friendly, show us how you’ve turned containers into a blooming display of creativity!

BEST RURAL GARDEN
This category is open to all gardens with a rural address.

JUDGES CHOICE GARDEN - No nomination
This special award will be presented to a garden that catches the judge’s eye but has not been formally entered into the competition. While touring around town, the judge may come across a garden that stands out for its beauty, creativity, or overall impact. This anonymous recognition is a way to honor the effort and passion of gardeners who may not have entered but still deserve to be celebrated. It’s a heartfelt nod to those quietly making our town more vibrant and greener — one garden at a time.
