Wildlife Deterrence Program

Published on 26 March 2026

Council advises residents that a noise-making device (gas gun) will be deployed in the following areas of as part of a short-term wildlife deterrence and relocation program:

  • Edkins Park;
  • Longreach Civic and Cultural Centre; and,
  • Kite Street near the Showground yards.

Council will operate the device in the above areas at the following times:

  • Between 7am and 10am
  • From Monday 30 March 2026 to Thursday 2 April 2026.

The device will be used to discourage wildlife (Little Corella – Cacatua sanguinea gymnopis) from congregating in areas where damage is occurring to Council infrastructure and nearby properties. The device produces a loud, startling noise at irregular intervals to encourage animals to move away from the area and relocate naturally to surrounding habitat.

The device does not cause physical harm to animals. It does not discharge projectiles, chemicals, or traps, and does not injure or kill wildlife. Its purpose is to temporarily modify animal behaviour through sound only, prompting Corella to move on safely without distress or injury.

Council will operate the device for limited durations only, monitor its use, and review effectiveness regularly. Noise-making devices such as gas guns are not a permanent solution and are used only where other measures have proven ineffective or impractical.

Loud noises can be unsettling for some domestic animals, particularly dogs. As a precaution, nearby residents are encouraged to ensure dogs are securely contained within yards or indoors while the gas gun is in operation. This advice is consistent with guidance commonly provided during fireworks displays and other noise-related events, where securing pets can help reduce anxiety and prevent escape.

Council encourages residents to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their pets during this temporary activity:

  • Ensure your yard or enclosure is secure if your dog has noise sensitivity.
  • Residents are encouraged to secure dogs in yards, kennels or indoors.
  • Ensure your animal is wearing its registration tag and is microchipped so that Council can reunite you if it escapes.
  • Contact Council on (07) 4658 4111 to update your animal registration details.
