Park details

Situated along the Thomson Developmental Road, the Iningai Nature Reserve pays tribute to the Iningai Traditional Owners who once inhabited the Thomson River area from Stonehenge to Muttaburra before European settlers arrived. This reserve, a part of the Longreach Town Common, features floodplain areas and waterholes.

You can explore three walking loops—Coolibah, Wilga, and Gidgee—choose one or trek all three. Each loop offers a unique experience suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The landscape belongs to the Mitchell Grass Downs, a vast natural grassland ecosystem renowned worldwide.

From Coolibah-lined waterholes to flat, thinly vegetated clay floodplains and nearby open gidgee woodlands, the reserve hosts diverse ecosystems. The area is home to at least 13 mammals, 10 fish, 2 crustaceans, 130 bird species, 11 frogs, 22 reptiles, and 166 plant species, some of which are seasonal. These creatures, like the Stripe-faced Dunnart, have adapted remarkably to the arid climate, often residing in the clay soil crevices.

It's a haven where it's just you and nature—an ideal spot for birdwatchers and avid hikers. Bring the kids along to embark on a journey of exploration, discovering the landscapes through their eyes.
